Okay…bodyparts….hair. Okay, let’s start with the eyebrows. Okay, let’s do sentences. First one, eyebrows. Some Japanese people have short eyebrows. Eyelashes. Many young ladies wear eyelash extensions for longer eyelashes. Beard. In many cold places, men wear big beards. Mustache. Many young boys want to grow a mustache. Goatee. Excuse me, Goa-tee. A nice goatee is hard to maintain. Sideburns. Having only sideburns was a famous style in the 70’s. Everything is basically area+hair when it comes to other places with hair. For example, arm hair. Or, arm-pit hair. Armpit hair. Uh, in some countries, women don’t shave their armpit hair. My grandfather has long nose hair. Okay, there you are! Good luck!

It’s the beginning of October and fall is in full effect.

Recently I shaved my beard for the first time in a long time. I’m trying some skin treatment and my goatee gets in the way!

I’ve heard long beards have been in trend in the U.S. for the past few years. But I live in Japan (And I’m loving it I must say)!

I wanted to bring to some Japanese English learners attention the different names we have for the hair on our bodies.

Sounds so interesting right?

I know, I know! Not really.

You may feel it unimportant until you try to describe the types of hair on the human body, but there is a category of hair in which Japanese may have problems saying in English:

Facial hair

In Japan facial hair styles I feel are quite rare. But in the US and other places where people grow these types of styles, and it could be useful to know when describing someone.

A word of caution: Pointing out facial hair styles are usually only appropriate for men!

If a woman chooses to sport a mustache, I’m not sure she would appreciate being identified as the lady with the thick mustache.

Only one way to find out…

Kidding!

The point of this topic and video is that we normally use the facial hair terminology, which I found in Japanese has little to no special terminology.

These terms are:

  • Beard
  • Mustache
  • Sideburns
  • Goatee

Have you heard of every one of these?
