First what is fluent?
The dictionary defines it as: “Smooth, graceful, and easy.”
Okay. Now you understand the qualities. Now, imagine things you do in this manner.
I thought about: Walking, eating, sleeping.
Brushing your teeth, washing your hair, or showering.
Think of what all these things have in common:
They help you survive.
100% of normally functional people can do all survival task fluently, even if not perfectly.
Now we know what develops fluency, but how do we execute it?
Train yourself to see the skill you want as survival. Then your mind will take over after about 66 days of training and you’ll be on autopilot in maintaining your development.
The three general ways to do this are:
- Throw yourself in a situation where you must speak English for an extended period of time for survival, e.g. Exchange student, working overseas, or long trips to English speaking countries.
- Read, watch or listen to survival fostering things (for your life) from now on in English instead of Japanese, e.g. newspapers, podcast, or job related enhancing information (Books, websites, Youtube videos)
- Do all of your fun in English if you cannot afford to spend time surviving in English due to the nature of your job.
I guarantee you’ll figure out a way to become fluent. Our minds are amazing that way.
